Further education colleges in Wales are transforming. Some are merging with other colleges; some are leading local consortia; and others are partnering schools, higher education institutions and training companies. Colleges believe that these changes will secure better opportunities for learners and better value for public money.

1,000 young proto-engineers taste new skills

1,000 school pupils from all across Wales are set to enjoy Engineering Week Wales 2009 (EWW09), which kicks off on 23 November at 16 further education colleges. A range of engineering models will be designed, constructed, and even raced to exciting finishes in some cases – all by school pupils aged 13 and 14 under the guidance of expert engineering tutors and apprentices.

“The Learning Country” under threat
Adults who want to enrol at college to learn new skills are being turned away in increasing numbers as colleges are told that scarce public funds must be spent elsewhere. Whilst more 16-year olds are choosing to study full time at college, the Welsh Assembly Government's draft budget makes clear that those teenagers can only be accommodated by freezing out adults looking to upskill or reskill in today’s changing and challenging economy.

Wales celebrates vocational qualifications success
For the first time, Wales, England, Scotland and Northern Ireland will all celebrate Vocational Qualifications (VQ) Day together this year on Wednesday 24 June 2009. Here in Wales, the Senedd in Cardiff Bay will be transformed into a marketplace of vocational learning expertise throughout the morning, and will feature demonstrations by VQ learners including floristry, engineering, electronics, renewable energy, holistic therapy, health and fitness, performing arts, childcare, catering, carpentry, IT, and hair and beauty.
